This film is a testament to the transformative power of music and its ability to promote positive social change. The Venezuelan Youth Orchestra System, an incredible network of hundreds of orchestras formed within most of Venezuela’s towns and villages, is designed to expose rural children to the wonders of music. Incredible as it may seem, the system has become one of the most important and beautiful social phenomena in modern history. The film portrays the inspirational stories of world class musicians trained by the Venezuelan system, including the Berlin Philharmonic’s youngest player Edicson Ruiz and world renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel. Be sure to see Solveig Hoogestein’s “Maroa,” a stirring dramatic story of one young woman whose life is transformed by her experience with the Youth Orchestra. To Play And To Fight is a model that we in America should strive to adopt.
